Welcome to The Chrysalis Stage, where your pottery skills evolve and take on new forms. This intermediate course is all about building on the fundamentals and learning more complex techniques to refine your creations and make them truly stand out.

What You'll Learn

  • Introduction to the Pottery Wheel: Get a deeper understanding of working with the wheel, mastering the art of centering, trimming, and shaping with precision.
  • Creating Mugs with Handles: Refine your skills by making mugs and learning advanced techniques for shaping and attaching handles.
  • Trimming Techniques & Finishing: Dive deeper into trimming methods to give your pieces that professional, polished look. You’ll learn various finishing techniques to elevate your work.
  • Exploring Forms: We’ll experiment with different cylinder forms—creating mugs, cups, and other vessels. You’ll learn to play with shapes and sizes while maintaining control over the clay.
  • Glazing Basics: Understand the art of glazing, from choosing colors to applying different types of glazes. We’ll cover how glazing affects the final product and the science behind it.
  • The Full Process: You’ll follow each piece from start to finish—shaping, trimming, glazing, and firing—gaining a comprehensive understanding of the entire pottery-making process.
  • Setting Up Your Own Pottery Space: Learn the essentials of creating your own studio space, including the tools, materials, and setup needed to start working independently.
  • Studio Collaboration & Projects: As part of this course, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with StudioApart on real commissioned projects. This gives you valuable hands-on experience working on client-based designs.
  • Piece Limit: You’ll create 15-20 pieces throughout the course (based on the size and complexity of your designs). Extra pieces are welcomed for those eager to experiment more—additional clay can be purchased if needed.

  • Advanced Pinching & Wedging: Explore more advanced techniques in pinching and wedging, allowing you to craft more intricate designs.
  • Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Learn how to troubleshoot common pottery issues, from cracks in the clay to glazing mishaps.
  • Critique Sessions: We’ll have regular sessions where we discuss your progress, offer feedback, and explore ways to improve your pieces.

By the end of this course, you’ll have not only improved your technical skills but also built the confidence to start creating independently in your own space or take on commissioned work.
